August 2006 President's Message
Patricia Moran
Dear Colleagues,
You will notice a slightly abbreviated August newsletter from the Greater New York Chapter of AFP. Our newsletter is coordinated by an all-volunteer group and like most New Yorkers, AFP volunteers take a break from our organization’s mission, projects, and programs during the last few weeks of summer.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many dedicated volunteers who work on behalf of our chapter and carry out exceptional educational programs, coordinate our National Philanthropy Day celebration, maintain our website and e-newsletter, work with officials in Albany on legislative issues that effect our profession, and present our annual Fund Raising Day Conference.
Although we are taking a break during August, our chapter was very active earlier in the summer. For the 27th year, our Chapter presented Fund Raising Day in New York (FRDNY)—the largest one-day fundraising conference in the United States. I hope you will enjoy the photographs from that day in the e-newsletter. The evaluations have been reviewed in our on-going effort to improve our annual conference. Gretchen Dystra received high remarks for her keynote address and we all learned why she prefers flip-flops these days. If you were not at the conference, find a FRDNY attendee to learn about her flip-flops and her plans for the future. We are already preparing for the 28th annual FRDNY so look for future emails, mailings, and newsletters about the June 2007 conference and be one of the first to sign up!
In early June, the Chapter partnered with Craigslist Foundation to help present Craigslist New York Nonprofit Boot Camp. More than 500 participants from grass root organizations gathered for a day of knowledge, networking, and resources focusing on starting and running an effective nonprofit organization. AFP worked with the Foundation Center, Cause Effective, and NYCharities.org to present information on fundraising. When you return to your office after a much-needed vacation, please take a few minutes to review our website and mark your calendar for some very important and interesting AFP programs. Please join us on October 16th for the Chapter’s annual meeting at the Chamberlain Luncheon and on November 13th for our National Philanthropy Day Celebration at the Rainbow Room (see our calendar for more specific details).
I would encourage you to consider volunteering 10 hours in the next year for the Greater New York AFP Chapter—we could use your expertise!
Enjoy your summer vacation and we will see you at one or more AFP events in the fall.
