July 2006 President's Message
Patricia Moran
Dear Colleagues,
You have the power to influence the focus and direction of the Greater New York Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) in a very concrete way—by volunteering on a working chapter committee or nominating a colleague (or yourself) for board membership. As you are preparing for a much deserved summer vacation, please take a few minutes to consider increasing your involvement in the volunteer management of the Greater New York Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. If you are currently involved with a chapter committee, nominate yourself for the Board of Directors.
The Board determines the strategic direction for the chapter and is very involved in educational programs, networking activities for members and non-members, fundraising endeavors, and celebrating our profession through National Philanthropy Day. We need experienced and active AFP members to help us with fiscal matters, promotion and branding, and long-range strategic planning for our chapter.
Board members also interact with the volunteers and staff at the International AFP and have regular contact with development colleagues in other areas of the country. I volunteered for the Chapter on the Professional Advancement Committee and coordinated workshop programs for two years followed by a year as Chair of the Professional Advancement Committee. After serving on the board for three years, I was selected as President Elect and now President of the Greater New York Chapter. On an international level, I serve on the IAFP Governance Task Force. I have enjoyed meeting and working with board leaders from other major metropolitan chapters in Chicago, Toronto, Washington DC, Philadelphia, and Boston.
Board members are expected to actively participate in board meetings (averaging seven per year), serve or chair a board committee, and participate as a donor to the Chapter at the $200 or greater level. New board members begin their term in January of each year and serve for a three year term. Nominations may be submitted by any member of AFP in the Greater New York Chapter and we welcome self-applications. Sheila Stanford, President, The Stanford Group, Inc., and Immediate Past President of the Greater New York Chapter, chairs the nomination committee. Sheila and her committee work through the summer to present a slate of officers and directors to the board in the early fall. We are committed to nominating a board of directors who are actively involved in the on-going programs of the Chapter.
Please go to the members only area of the Greater New York Chapter website to find the form for board nomination and to review the information about board membership and consider volunteering your expertise to the Greater New York Chapter Board of Directors. Please also see pages 5-7 of this e-newsletter. If you are not currently involved in committee work but would like to get involved, please consider volunteering for a chapter committee. We need your expertise, volunteer time and energy to continue to provide high quality programming to AFP members and non-members. Please go to the website to see the numerous volunteer opportunities that are available to you. Make a difference to our profession by giving your talent, expertise and, yes, some of your valuable time!
You can also go to the IAFP website to submit yourself or a colleague to the IAFP board of directors. The deadline for submitting an application is August 31, 2006. The criteria for the IAFP board is listed on the website but most important is your volunteer activities and leadership to the International Association of Fundraising Professionals.
I look forward to working with you as a new volunteer or board member in 2007.
