May 2006 President's Message
Patricia Moran
Dear Colleagues:
I hope to see you at the New York Marriott Marquis on Friday, June 23, 2006, to enjoy a day of educational programs, networking, and celebrating our profession! Fund Raising Day in New York (FRDNY) 2006 is the 27th annual conference presented by the Greater New York Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Like each of our conferences since 1979, we promise an excellent educational program for everyone with an interest in fundraising. People new to the profession, seasoned practitioners, and those certified as fundraising executives (CFREs) will all gather at the Marriott at Times Square to explore new topics, current issues, and successful strategies for improving fundraising in the nonprofit sector. We also welcome board members and volunteers who are responsible for fundraising at their organizations.
I have already marked my schedule and plan to begin the day at the Branding Toward Bigger Gifts session presented by Sarah Durham, Founder of Big Duck. I also encourage you to check out Andrea Kihlstedt’s and Richard Berlin’s session on Board development. Andrea spoke at a standing room only workshop for our chapter a few years ago and you will not be disappointed by this critical session on high achieving boards. Review the program as it is packed with exciting and interested topics presented by the best fundraising experts and practitioners in the country.
During the luncheon, Gretchen Dykstra, President and CEO of the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation, will deliver the keynote address. Ms. Dykstra leads the monumental efforts to oversee the organization that is building the planned WTC memorial, scheduled to open in 2009. She and her team are responsible for raising the funding for the memorial and will ultimately oversee its operation. Governor George Pataki said on the third anniversary of 9/11, “September 11th is never just going to become a date; 2,700 isn’t just going to become a number of the people that we lost. We are going to honor the memory of each individual, and that’s why every name will be read today.” I look forward to hearing from Ms. Dykstra to learn how New Yorkers will honor the memory of each individual and provide an appropriate memorial to the events of September 11, 2001.
Make sure you visit the exhibition area to meet with vendors who provide a wide range of products and services for the nonprofit sector. While you are there, you can check your email at the Internet Café.
FRDNY 2006 provides a wide range of topics such as Ethical Solutions to Ethical Dilemmas, Public Relations 1-2-3, Start Here: Successful Campaigns for a Small or New Organization, so I am sure you will walk away from the conference with a new tool kit for effective fundraising.
If you are interested in applying for a scholarship, please make sure to submit your application by May 5. To receive an application and guidelines, please email: info@frdny.org
Finally, please consider being a donor to our scholarship fund. The Maurice Gurin Memorial Scholarships are available to those who would otherwise be unable to participate in the conference. It would be great to add your name to the list of donors to the Gurin Scholarship Fund. You can make a donation as part of the conference registration process.
I look forward to seeing you on Friday, June 23, at the Marriott Marquee for Fund Raising Day in New York 2006!
