September 2005 President's Message

Sheila Stanford

Dear Colleagues,

With summer officially behind us as of the Labor Day holiday, the fundraising season heats up for most of us. Our success in meeting the challenges we face will make a great deal of difference to thousands, sometimes even millions of men, women and children. We need not only to be well-intentioned, but also well-informed if we are to do our jobs well. After all, more people give more money during the final three months of the year than at any other time.

Membership in AFP’s Greater New York chapter constitutes a valuable tool in keeping your skills and contacts sharp. This Fall, chapter events offer best practices, opportunities to exchange ideas and concerns with colleagues and experts via our September Mini-Academy on Individual Gifts and October’s Chamberlain Luncheon. National Philanthropy Day in November brings you another not-to-be-missed AFP event, this year featuring a probing discussion about philanthropy and the media. (Please see the chapter’s calendar elsewhere in this e-newsletter for details about all upcoming events.)

Your participation in chapter governance represents another important aspect of your membership. Right now, as the chapter seeks nominations for its Board of Directors, you have a wonderful opportunity to either step up yourself, or suggest a colleague you believe would want to contribute in this important way. Elections will take place at the October Chamberlain Luncheon, so don’t waste a minute contacting the chapter office if you have a nomination. You’ll also want to reserve your ticket for the Luncheon very soon, not to mention your organization’s table for National Philanthropy Day.

I look forward to seeing you at these events, and wish you the best fundraising season ever!

With best regards,

Sheila Stanford
