November 2004 President's Message
Sheila Stanford
Dear Colleagues,
As you read this post-election issue of the Greater New York AFP Chapter’s e-newsletter, you may be feeling either near-despair or almost-euphoria, depending on whether your candidates won or lost. In either case, you’re probably having to put it aside as best you can in order to take up your responsibilities as a fundraiser. Especially in this season of giving, a fundraiser’s tasks are many as the clock tick, tick, ticks its way toward the end of the year.
Regardless of the outcome of this election, the nonprofit community’s responsibilities haven’t changed. The hungry still need to be fed, the homeless housed, the sick healed. On their behalf, it is not just important, it’s imperative that we redouble our efforts to inspire donors to invest in education, senior services, job training, and the full range of human service endeavors that sometimes even bring opposing political views together.
On November 10th, the Chapter will celebrate National Philanthropy Day—another event that is likely to bring together individuals with opposing political points of view. What they share is a commitment to philanthropy in all its aspects. They encompass, in addition to fundraisers, donors, trustees, executive directors and staff members representing a broad cross-section of New York’s not-for-profit community. It will be quite a celebration, and a timely reminder and reinforcement of our mutual purpose. I hope to see you there.
With best regards,

Sheila Stanford
