September 2004 President's Message
Sheila Stanford
Dear Colleagues,
With the Republican National Convention in New York as I write this, I’m hiding out in my New Jersey office! Not because I’m a Democrat, but because I fear the distraction from work.
Despite that, having spoken to many friends and colleagues over the past couple of weeks, I know I’m not the only one who’s avoiding Manhattan this week, I think my reason for doing so is a sorry comment on my priorities: Here we are in the last week of August, with a unique event taking place in mid-town, and a glorious beach two miles from my doorstep, but all I’m worried about is working efficiently. I truly have lost the balancing act!
As fundraisers, we all will be hard-pressed this fall to find a balance between the needs of our charitable employers and donors, and the national preoccupation with the presidential election, no matter how it turns out. The response of the stock market, the rise or fall in consumer confidence also will affect 2004 end-of-year giving. With so many variables out of our control, we have our work cut out for us!
I hope this issue of the Greater New York chapter’s eNewsletter brings you some useful ammunition for the fall fundraising season. After all, in the words of Mal Pancoast, “The odds of hitting a target go up dramatically when you aim at it.”
