June 2004 President's Message
Sheila Stanford
Dear Colleagues,
By the time you read this, I will be back where I started, so to speak: Dublin, Ireland. Ostensibly, the reason for the trip is the wedding of my niece, Aoife. But really, this happy celebration is just a good excuse for my six siblings and spouses, our children, me and now, even our children’s children, to spend time together. Even when there’s no wedding to celebrate, we organize these get-togethers every couple of years in a different part of the world. (“Organize” might be stretching it a bit: Sometimes it’s like herding cats!)
Planning this trip has given me an opportunity to think about the “tribe” we Stanfords have become—now numbering 47 American, Irish, Canadian and New Zealand citizens— not to mention all those Irish cousins, aunts and uncles! Our professions and passions run the gamut from law to medicine, photography to winemaking, with a couple of computer nerds thrown in. I’m the only fundraiser in the mix and still find it impossible to adequately explain what I do for a living.
I look forward on my return to the 25th Fund Raising Day In New York, and hope to see you there. The program has been astoundingly well-planned by dedicated volunteers who not only know what we do for a living as fundraisers, they can teach us how to do it better!
Slante!
