May 2004 President's Message
Sheila stanford
Dear Colleagues,
I’ve just finished talking with the editor of the New York Nonprofit Press about the challenges to fundraising in New York City. That conversation could have gone on for hours, given the war, the economy, the budget cuts, lack of donor confidence in institutions, etc., etc., etc.! These certainly are strenuous times for our profession and for the charities we serve.
To help ensure that fundraisers in the Greater New York area are up to the challenges, the Chapter’s Board will soon revisit and update its strategic plan. Key issues include service to members, diversity, outreach to nonmembers and effective communications. In addition, Board members have recently completed a round of interviews with AFP’s Affiliation Task Force, which we hope will be useful in identifying avenues for productive chapter/national communications going forward.
This year, as we made plans to mark the 25th anniversary of Fund Raising Day In New York on June 25th, we set a goal of awarding 25 scholarships to New York fundraisers who otherwise would not be able to attend this remarkable conference. With almost two months still to go, and with much support from Chapter Board members, we have surpassed this “stretch” goal. Congratulations to those who helped make this outstanding achievement possible, as well as to those who will benefit from their generosity!
With best regards,

Sheila Stanford
