November 2006 President's Message

Patricia Moran

Dear Colleagues,

John Hicks, John Hughes, and Yvonne Presha and I recently attended the fall 2006 Delegate Assembly of the International Association of Fundraising Professionals held in Los Angeles, CA. As our chapter’s four delegates, we networked with chapter leaders from the US and Canada and AFP members from other parts of the world. This was a unique meeting as the delegates reviewed and voted in favor of the Governance Task Force recommendations. The Los Angeles meeting was the last meeting for the Delegate Assembly as the new governance procedures will be implemented through a transition plan starting immediately. If you are interested in learning more about the governance of IAFP, please review the article in the newsletter that spells out the new governance structure.

Also at the Delegate Assembly, IAFP presented three long-time members with the Founders’ Medallion. Henry “Hank” Goldstein, a member of the Greater New York Chapter was one of the Founders’ Medallion recipients. In addition to being honored with the Founders’ Medallion, Hank was also honored for being a member of the first class of fundraisers who earned the Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential and for renewing the CFRE for the past twenty-five years.

Hank is president of The ORAM Group in New York City. He became chair of AFP, then known simply as the National Society of Fund Raisers, in 1973. At that time, the organization had a debt of $3,000. To ensure the society’s solvency, he co-signed a note to personally guarantee the Society’s debt. Two years later, the organization was back on solid ground. Since then, Goldstein has continued to serve AFP and the entire fundraising community in a variety of capacities.

I want to take the opportunity to thank Hank for his service to our profession and to the Association of Fundraising Professionals at the chapter and international level.

I would like to encourage Greater New York Chapter members to consider volunteering on an IAFP task force or committee. The organization would be a stronger one with the expertise and experience that AFP Greater New York members bring to the table. You might be interested in one or more of the following areas:

  • Awards to Professional Fundraisers, Volunteers and Youth
  • Diversity in the Profession
  • Membership Services
  • Professional Advancement
  • Services to Chapters
  • US Government Relations

If you are interested in volunteer at the International or Chapter level, please email me (pmoran@fordham.edu) and I will send you additional information and a volunteer application form.

I hope to see you at National Philanthropy Day!
