Messages from Chapter Leadership

February 2008 VP Communications

Andrew Shackett

Dear Colleagues,

When asked last fall to assume the position as Vice President for Communications on the AFP Greater New York Chapter Board of Directors I accepted immediately. The Vice President for Communications chairs the Communications Committee that oversees our Chapter’s monthly e-newsletter and website. The Committee consists of committed and talented members who bring us timely and relevant articles and information that help each of us be better and more informed fundraisers.

By virtue of the profession we all have chosen, communication is key to our success—be it cultivating donors, laying the framework for a capital or endowment campaign, or seeking support from a foundation for a new programmatic initiative. So, it was particularly encouraging to learn recently that Chapter members greatly value communication and information sharing as essential benefits of membership. In a member survey conducted this past fall, respondents overwhelming rated the e-newsletter and website as high on the list of benefits.

As the year progresses, we look forward to bringing you new e-newsletter features. In fact, this article is one of the first. Alternating months, from the President’s Column, Chapter Board leadership will use this space to introduce themselves and highlight some Chapter offering—a workshop, event or other timely topic.
In future e-newsletters we will report on the Chapter’s strategic plan and share with you more data from the member survey. As always, the newsletter will spotlight and celebrate our anchor events—Fundraising Day in New York City and National Philanthropy Day. We will offer articles that are relevant to strengthening our expertise and passion as fundraisers.

This e-newsletter belongs to all of us. We welcome your feedback and ideas. Is there a subject that you would like to see covered? Do you have an idea for a monthly or periodic feature? Is there a newly published book that you think deserves a review or an individual who would make for a good interview? Please share your ideas, articles and feedback by forwarding them to nycafp@nycafp.org.

On behalf of the Communications Committee, we hope you continue to enjoy and benefit from the AFP Greater New York Chapter e-newsletter.
Sincerely,

Andrew Shackett
VP, Communications
