Fundraising Day in New York 2008
Peggy Mathieu, CFRE
Dear Colleagues:
More than 2,100 fundraising professionals, volunteer board members, funders and other leaders in philanthropy from around the country gathered at the New York Marriott Marquis on Friday, June 13th for the 29th annual Fund Raising Day in New York. The near record-breaking attendance confirmed yet again that this important event—sponsored by the Greater New York Chapter AFP—is the largest one-day conference on philanthropy in the nation.
The FRDNY Committee promised a bigger, better than ever conference and that’s what the Committee delivered! The Operations team under the leadership of Co-Chairs Carrie Schindele and Stephanie Thomas planned a day that ran smoothly from start to finish thanks to the efforts of: Arrangements Co-Chairs Penny Stoil, Pat DeSibio and Paul Reitz; Conference Manager Eileen Dengler; AFP Greater New York Chapter President John Hicks, CFRE; and Chapter Managers Sharon Epstein and Fran Morris along with the members of the FRDNY Committee and more than 100 volunteers.
Not even a beautiful June day lured attendees away from the spectacular educational sessions and workshops orchestrated by Program Committee Vice Chairs Nancy Carmichael, Arlene Swartz and Annalee Van Kleeck. In addition to providing all the basics for first-time attendees, Educational Track and Workshop presenters were well prepared to ensure that even the most seasoned professional walked away from this conference with more than just one bit of valuable information.
Throughout the day, attendees visited Career Services in the 16th floor Skylobby for mentoring, résumé review and career counseling. Job seekers and organizations in search of candidates were able to find one another through the Jobs Bank. Twenty recipients of the coveted Maurice Gurin Scholarships were also able to participate in the conference and partake of all the offerings throughout the day, providing them with a field day of learning and networking opportunities.
The 85 vendors who joined us in the Exhibit Hall this year benefited from several new twists including longer break times, remaining open during lunch and a brand new, easy-to-navigate floor plan. Exhibit Chair Stu Boysen confirmed that these much heralded improvements allowed attendees seeking state-of-the-art products and services to spend quality time with vendors. The Exhibit Hall also played host to six well-placed Internet Café stations allowing guests to check in with their offices and important donors quickly and conveniently.
A highlight of the Day was Luncheon Keynote Speaker, The Honorable Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez, Secretary of State, New York State Department of State. Before becoming the first Hispanic appointed to this prestigious position, Secretary Cortés-Vázquez held leadership roles at several noteworthy nonprofit organizations including ASPIRA and the Hispanic Federation from which she was able to glean and share extraordinary vignettes on the art of the ask with the audience.
FRDNY 2008 is very grateful to the loyal friends and leaders in the industry for their generous underwriting and support of programs and activities associated with the event.
