September 2008 Co-Chairs NPD
Mary Fiore and Carrie Hoegh Marsh
The Greater New York Chapter of AFP’s National Philanthropy Day (NPD), chaired this year by Chapter Board members Mary Fiore and Carrie Marsh, recognizes the great contributions of people active in the philanthropic community who are dedicated to enriching our world. NPD celebrates the contributions that individuals and organizations make to countless causes and missions in our city. Donors, volunteers and heads of national, local, and community-based non-profits are recognized for their special gifts of time, vision and spirit. Organizations that will honor a philanthropist this year include: American Foundation for the Blind, American Red Cross in Greater New York, Covenant House International, Continuum Health Partners, Food Bank For New York City, NYU Langone Medical Center and United Cerebral Palsy, to name a few.
The NPD Committee is also pleased to announce that Malaak Compton-Rock will be the keynote speaker at this year’s National Philanthropy Day on Monday, November 17, 2008. Compton-Rock will share her determination to strengthen communities while inspiring others to join her in a quest for a more peaceful world.
Compton-Rock discovered her life’s calling when she began a career with UNICEF (The United Nations Children’s Fund). She influenced the creation of a special events and celebrity relations department which she led for three years. Her work put UNICEF on the map for many celebrities including Sarah Jessica Parker and Lawrence Fishburne.
After her experience with UNICEF, Compton-Rock was determined to create a non-profit of her own. In 1999, she married her new passion for good with her love for style by forming styleWORKS, an organization that provides comprehensive services to women moving from welfare to work. Her commitment did not stop there. She is spearheading a new project called Journey for Change: Empowering Youth Through Global Service, a program taking at-risk youth from Brooklyn, New York to South Africa for two weeks of volunteering. CNN is filming the initiative as a documentary hosted by Soledad O’Brien.
Her newly formed Angelrock Project brings all of her philanthropic priorities together. The project promotes volunteerism, social responsibility, and sustainable change. The online community provides information on how to volunteer, advice for making donations, links to her favorite charities and recommends companies whose products can be purchased to sustain third-world communities. Earlier this year, Compton-Rock’s participated in Oprah’s Big Give. The show teaches the lesson that anyone can give back and you don’t have to be rich or famous to do so. For Compton-Rock, she has dedicated herself to making this a priority for all, by living the way that Marian Wright Edelman described: “Service is the rent we pay for living.”
Join us at the 2008 National Philanthropy Day at Cipriani 42nd Street to celebrate the extraordinary dedication of Malaak Compton-Rock and other philanthropic leaders in our city. Tables are $1,950 and individual tickets are $100 for members and $140 for non-members.
