February 2009 VP, Communications Message
Andrew Shackett Dear Colleagues,
Since assuming the position as Vice President for Communications on the AFP Greater New York Chapter Board of Directors in 2008, the Communication’s Committee has worked hard at bringing you an e-newsletter that is full of compelling and timely articles, a robust calendar of events and activities that introduce members to new fundraising techniques and to help them build their network of colleagues, and volunteering opportunities such as the Chapter’s recently introduced mentoring program.
By virtue of the profession we all have chosen, communication is key to our success—be it cultivating donors, laying the framework for a capital or endowment campaign, or seeking support from a foundation for a new programmatic initiative. More than ever, in these uncertain times, this communication is essential. As this month’s lead article attests to, communication is indeed a skill.
To further our effort to communicate well, on alternating months from the President’s Column, this space will be used by Chapter Board leadership to introduce themselves and highlight some Chapter offering—a workshop, event or other timely topic.
As always, the e-newsletter will spotlight and celebrate our anchor events—Fund Raising Day in New York City and National Philanthropy Day®. We will offer articles that are relevant to strengthening our expertise and passion as fundraisers.
This e-newsletter belongs to all of us. We welcome your feedback and ideas. Is there a subject that you would like to see covered? Do you have an idea for a monthly or periodic feature? Is there a newly published book that you think deserves a review or an individual who would make for a good interview? Please share your ideas, articles and feedback by forwarding them to nycafp@nycafp.org.
On behalf of the Communications Committee, we hope you continue to enjoy and benefit from the AFP Greater New York Chapter e-newsletter.
Sincerely,

Andrew Shackett
