September 2009 National Philanthropy Day Co-Chairs Message

Toby E. Boshak and Mary I. Fiore

“The root of philanthropy is a simple thing called generosity…”
Abigail Disney

We are pleased to be working together again this year as co-chairs of the 2009 National Philanthropy Day in New York (NPD).  Sponsored by AFP’s founding chapter, The Greater New York Chapter, we will be at the elegant Plaza Hotel, on Monday, November 16th from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  We look forward to highlighting the work of our city’s greatest non-profits, while honoring and spotlighting their important volunteers and donors.

This year’s program discussion will feature filmmaker and philanthropist, Abigail Disney.  Her first film, a feature-length documentary called Pray the Devil Back to Hell tells the inspirational story of the women of Liberia and their efforts to bring peace to their broken nation after decades of destructive civil war.  Along with her husband, Abigail is also co-Founder and co-President of the Daphne Foundation, a progressive, social change foundation that makes grants to grassroots, community-based organizations working with low-income communities in New York City.  She currently serves on the boards and advisory boards of a broad range of organizations working in the areas of poverty, women’s issues, education and environment.  She is a dynamic speaker, one who infuses enthusiasm throughout a room.

The NPD luncheon has long been one of the Chapter’s most successful events as it clearly illustrates the central focus of many our lives and careers:  philanthropy.   The NPD luncheon brings together the many organizations that provide the most vital services, programs, enrichment and support of New York City, with the essential individuals and donors without whose support our missions would not be fulfilled.  Add the benefit of networking with our industry’s most respected development officers, NPD proves to be an educational, inspiring and fulfilling experience.

To quote Abigail Disney, “Connectedness is what separates philanthropy from just writing checks.”  Everyone attending NPD feels this connectedness, and we hope you will share in the excitement of the day that reinforces what connects us all: generosity. There are many opportunities in which to participate, from taking a table through your organization in honor of your philanthropist, or to becoming a sponsor.

Please contact the Chapter office at (212) 582-8565 or nycafp@nycafp.org for more information and to reserve your tickets or table today.  Or register online at www.nycafp.org.

We look forward to seeing you there!
