October 2009 President's Message
John W. Hicks, CFRE
Dear Colleagues,
What a tremendous start to our Fall!
On September 24, the New Jersey and Greater New York Chapters co-hosted our first Regional AFP Summit on Philanthropy at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. This event signifies the commitment of AFP to helping fundraising professionals and volunteer leaders in our region understand the continuing impact of the economic crisis on donors and not-for-profit institutions in our area. You can learn more about the Summit in this issue’s lead article.
I would like to acknowledge and thank the Board of Directors of AFP New Jersey, the host chapter for the event, and Chapter President Robert Wahlers, CFRE for brilliant and visionary partnership and leadership. This first – but certainly not last – collaboration between our chapters acknowledges that philanthropy with its attendant challenges and opportunities alike truly knows no boundaries between New York City and our neighboring communities. We look forward to continuing to find additional opportunities to combine forces to bring our members the best that our Association can offer.
I am also pleased to report that we are planning a full calendar of events for the fall, including our Chapter’s National Philanthropy Day luncheon scheduled for November 16th when we will honor the philanthropic leadership of New Yorkers who truly make a difference in the quality of life for so many in our city. Our featured philanthropist interviewee will be Abigail Disney, a remarkable woman who has made a lifetime commitment to helping so many others in need. We welcome your participation, so please visit our Chapter Website (www.afpnyc.org) to learn how your organization can honor a leader.
Collegially yours,

John W. Hicks, CFRE
President, Greater New York Chapter, AFP
