NPD 2007 Speaker
John C. Whitehead to Speak at National Philanthropy Day 2007
The National Philanthropy Day Committee is pleased to announce this year’s speaker, John C. Whitehead. An experienced organizational leader, Mr. Whitehead’s commitment to national and international conflict resolution and philanthropic change is sure to bring a global and passionate perspective to this year’s event.
Raised during the Great Depression, Mr. Whitehead later served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. It was through the experiences of his young adult life that Mr. Whitehead first learned the impact and importance of “doing well by doing good,” a mantra which he has come to exemplify through his philanthropic efforts.
As Co-Chairman of Goldman Sachs during some of investment banking’s most influential years, Mr. Whitehead spearheaded international finance operations that changed the face of American business. He became a major influence in the democratization of the former Soviet Union while Deputy Secretary of State under President Reagan, and upon his return to New York went on to serve as Chairman of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation.
John C. Whitehead’s lifelong passion for justice and progress is demonstrated in his work as a trustee of the International Rescue Committee (IRC). His involvement with the IRC spans over 50 years, but Mr. Whitehead’s most recent focus has been on actualizing a more financially sustainable future for the organization through the development of a major endowment. He has also helped to create The Freedom Fund in support of disaster response by teams of health care, human rights protection and media support professionals.
Please join us on Tuesday, November 13th at the Rainbow Room in New York City to celebrate National Philanthropy Day 2007 and the extraordinary dedication of John C. Whitehead to “doing good”.
