National Philanthropy Day 2007

The Greater New York Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (GNY–AFP) celebrated National Philanthropy Day 2007 on November 13 by honoring 24 of New York City’s leading philanthropists and inducting them into its hall of fame of donors and volunteers.

Special guest and noted New York City philanthropist John C. Whitehead, Chairman of the Goldman Sachs Foundation enlightened the sold-out audience during his discussion with Lesley Stahl, 60 Minutes, CBS correspondent about his commitment to philanthropy from his first pledge to his alma mater, Haverford College, to his more recent role in forming one of the world’s largest charitable foundations. Mr. Whitehead also shared his views on some of the frustrations that accompany the pleasures of active philanthropy, including leading the boards of over a dozen charities and his vision of the future.

This year’s celebration was enhanced by an official proclamation from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg declaring November 13, 2007 National Philanthropy Day in New York City. The Proclamation stated that the event “encourages Americans to reflect on the importance of charitable giving and the power it has to change lives for the better.”
