National Philanthropy Day 2008
NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY DAY 2008
The Greater New York Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (GNY–AFP) celebrated National Philanthropy Day 2008 on November 17 by honoring 13 of New York City’s leading philanthropists and inducting them into its hall of fame of donors and volunteers.
Special guest, Malaak Compton-Rock, Activist, Philanthropist and Founder, The Angelrock Project enlightened the sold-out audience during a discussion with Deborah Roberts, ABC News Correspondent about her commitment to philanthropy from her first job in the nonprofit sector at the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to the formation of The Angelrock Project, which serves as a pathway for those seeking pertinent information on how to lead a life of service. Ms. Compton-Rock also shared her views on instilling a passion for service at a young age. She cited a recent trip with her own children along with 30 at-risk youth from The Salvation Army Bushwick Community Center in Brooklyn to Johannesburg, South Africa. They volunteered in the poverty-stricken shanty towns of Diepsloot and Soweto helping orphaned and vulnerable children. The trip was designed to empower the participants not only to have a vision for their own lives, but to empower those around them by living a life of purpose and service.
