Hope Is Not a Strategy: A Systems Approach to Revenue Diversification

Entirely new approaches to moving resources to the societal commons combined with two years of economic turmoil have left many nonprofits desperately seeking innovation, yet paralyzed by, or thrashing around in, the complexity of the funding landscape.   Certainly, pure charity remains part of the nonprofit revenue metric. But innovation is taking place outside of pure charitable transfers. Simply hoping that this innovation will suddenly flow onto balance sheets is rarely productive. What is needed is a system for assessing possible resource variations, understanding their organizational implications, and building the capacity to attract and manage them within nonprofit mission. This session will describe the complex of resource options that now constitutes nonprofit “fundraising,” provide an analytic framework for understanding the implication of each, and offer a set of organizing principles for developing a revenue diversification plan.

Speaker: Dr. Susan Raymond, Executive Vice President, Changing Our World, Inc.
